Doris Sorendo

"I'm so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers.” -L.M. Montgomery
A lover of all things Autumn, Doris Elaine (Lieber) Sorendo was born October 23, 1954, to Gerald Sr. and Madeline (Hillsinger) Lieber. True to her nature, Doris faced her cancer diagnosis with stubborn determination and relentless hope. She made certain to see one last Earthly October before being called home to the Lord, in the early hours of Monday, the 5th.
Her final days were spent surrounded by the love, laughter, and strength of her family. A woman of endless skills and passions, Doris was rarely idle. She was a talented seamstress and knitter, wrapping friends and family in love throughout the years. A fabulous cook and baker, Doris enjoyed hosting and bringing family together on holidays. Many hours were spent in her garden with the cardinals and hummingbirds, that would return to her, year after year. Doris loved all animals, always doting on her cats and dogs. She was an avid reader, who also enjoyed symphonies and the Ballet.
Doris graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1972. She continued her education as an adult; receiving her degree from Powelson Business Institute in 1982. Her alma-matter would become a constant in her life, employed by Skaneateles Central School District over more than 35 years, across various offices. Doris touched countless young lives, and developed many friendships with her fellow colleagues, who she spoke of fondly. Always ready with words of wisdom, a stern look, or a quarter for lunch; Mrs. Sorendo, and her kind heart, was adored and respected by generations of students. After school hours, she chaperoned dances, ticketed and manned concessions for district sporting events, and supported disabled students in their athletic pursuits. A talented accountant, Doris concluded her career with SCSD in the district offices, before retiring in 2017.
Beyond a fulfilling career and many friendships, her work within the district also brought the love of her life. Doris and Mike met in 1984, while both working at Waterman Elementary School. Married in 1986, the couple went on to enjoy 40 happy years together with their children, and grandchildren. When not working on home renovations together, they enjoyed vacationing across New England, visiting Gettysburg historic sites, and creating everlasting memories at Letchworth State Park - Doris' favorite, and the highlight of their honeymoon.
Outside of her work within the school district, Doris was an active participant in several community churches throughout her life. Including First Baptist Church of Skaneateles; where she, and her husband, were active members for more than 10 years. She provided support to the congregation and community in various capacities, including but certainly not limited to, bookkeeping and volunteering in church events throughout the year.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Gerald Lieber Jr., and sister, Lisa Reisman.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael J. Sorendo; her daughter, Kimberly M. Hall, sons Johnathan R. Clarke, and Michael V. Sorendo; grandchildren, Cassandra E. (Tyler) Dufford, Zachary R. Hall, Zachary K. Weiler, Caden Clarke, Dakota Clarke; and five great grandchildren, Maya, Samuel, Anna, Jennifer, and Bailey (Dufford).
She also leaves behind her sisters, Lynn (“Woody”) Malone and Susan Lieber, brothers James (Shirley) Lieber, David (Amy) Lieber; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
No services will be held, per her final wishes. Please consider donating to St. Judes Hospital, or the ASPCA, in Doris’ honor.
