October 23, 1946 – May 22, 2026

Jimmie R. Cross, lovingly known as “Jim” and “Poppy,” passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, after living his best life while courageously facing the many challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 79 years old.
Born on October 23, 1946, Jim spent his entire life in Skaneateles, New York, on the lake he deeply loved. Skaneateles Lake was woven into the fabric of who he was, a place where he built lifelong friendships, shared countless adventures, and created cherished memories with family and friends.
Jim was the devoted husband of Sharon Fessler Cross, his best friend and “his everything,” with whom he shared 52 years in the beautiful home they designed and built together. A self-taught builder and fixer-upper, Jim took immense pride in creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
He was a proud and dedicated member of IBEW Local #1249 and worked as a lineman for 55 years. Jim’s strong work ethic, determination, and willingness to help others defined both his career and his everyday life. He also proudly served his community as a volunteer firefighter for several years with the Skaneateles Fire Department.
Family was always at the center of Jim’s world. He was a loving father to Sara Bethke (Tim) and Adam Cross (Jessica), and an incredibly proud grandfather to Hadley and Harper Bethke, and Noah, Asher, and Anna Cross. “Poppy” rarely missed an opportunity to travel and cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events, continuing the same enthusiastic support he gave Sara and Adam throughout their school and college athletic careers.
Jim generously gave his time coaching youth softball, baseball, and hockey, impacting many young lives in the Skaneateles community. Summers on the lake brought him tremendous joy, especially teaching local kids how to waterski. An accomplished barefoot skier, Jim proudly earned lifelong bragging rights for his skills on the water.
Jim and Sharon also enjoyed wintering in Fort Pierce, Florida, where they formed many treasured lifelong friendships.
He also treasured simple moments, evenings by the lake with bonfires, s’mores, family, and friends, the kind of gatherings that became lasting memories for everyone lucky enough to share them. Always close by his side was his loyal dog, Ruby, a faithful companion whom he dearly loved.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, George and Sally Cross; his brother, Rob Cross; his father-in-law, Doug Fessler; brother-in-law, John Mann; nephew, Matthew Collard; and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Jim is survived by his mother-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” Fessler; sisters-in-law Marilyn Mann, Darlene (Rich) Winters, and Patti (Joe) Collard; sister-in-law Alice Cross; Hazel Cunningham (Jim); several beloved nieces and nephews; and his special cousin, Kim Cross Reichert, whom he loved like a sister.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Glowacki, Skaneateles, the staff of Upstate Medical Community Hospital Emergency Room and 6th Floor for the exceptional kindness, compassion, and care shown to Jim and his family during his hospital stay.
At Jim’s request, there will be a private service, with a special Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
Jim will be remembered for his steady presence, generous heart, sense of humor, love of family, and deep connection to the lake and community that shaped his life. His legacy lives on in the family he adored, the home he built, the lives he touched, and the memories made along the shores of Skaneateles Lake.
