1/24/25

William Arthur (Billy) Wilson, formally of Elbridge, New York, passed away on January 24, 2025, in Syracuse, New York, at the age of 87. Born June 1, 1937, to Ivan and Irene Wilson, Billy was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Billy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. Shortly after returning home, fate brought him to meet his then nurse, and future wife, Joanne McNally, while he was hospitalized. They married in 1958 and shared nearly five decades together, building a loving family and a life full of laughter and adventure.
Billy’s professional journey reflected his passion for traffic safety and innovation. He began his career as a technician with the State of New York Department of Transportation before taking a leap of faith and founding Empire Traffic in 1985. Through his business, Billy worked tirelessly to improve road safety by selling and installing traffic signals for municipalities throughout New York State.
Every day was an adventure with Billy. Fun often followed him in his love of life, and he loved to tell the interesting stories of his many adventures. His sense of humor, easy-going nature, and shenanigans made him a favorite in his community. Whether spinning a tale, lending a helping hand, or cracking a joke, Billy brought joy to others.
Billy was also a volunteer firefighter for Elbridge, New York, and often participated in community events. Most importantly, he was always quick to grab his tools to assist a friend or neighbor in need, particularly with electrical repairs. Family was at the heart of everything Billy did.
He cherished his role as a father to his five children, Brenda (Jerry) Baron of Durham, NC; Paul (Mary) Wilson of Syracuse, NY; Tammy (John) Ely of Cayuga, NY; Lauren (Ross) Kennedy of Camillus, NY; and Diana (Michael) Bird of Marcellus, NY. He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren: Kristy (Tavary) Williams, Ryan (Erica) Ely, Elizabeth Wilson, Mackenzie Kennedy, Jon Kennedy, Alexandra Bird, Liam Baron, Madeline Bird, Mitchel Baron, Alana Baron, Olivia Bird, Kent Wilson, and Annaliese Bird.
Billy was also blessed with five great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Joanne, his parents, Ivan and Irene, his sister Sally Rogers, and his brother Raymond Wilson. He is survived by his brother, John (Debbie) Wilson, and countless friends and extended family who will miss him dearly.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 30th at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 31st at 10:00 am at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jordan, New York.
